Home > About Flatbush Junction
Flatbush Junction Recordings was founded in the spring of 2005 as a subsidiary of Laskar Music, a division of Laskar Group, LLC. We work hand-in-hand with the artists we put out in order to help them acheive their vision for the music they make.
Are we an independent label?
Yes.
Do we sometimes create strategic partnerships with major labels and distributors in order to get the music our artists release heard?
Yes.
How far do we take it?
We go as far as licensing out tracks to compilations, advertisers, ringtone providers and soundtracks. We are pretty open to creative music distribution models and at the end of the day, we're in the business of helping our artists get heard.
Do we feel this sacrifices the integrity of the music our artists make?
Not at all.
Who put us in charge anyways?
Having helped in the establishment of premier independent hip hop label, Soulspazm Records, and various other independent and major subsidiary entities in the music industry, the1shanti has made Flatbush Junction Recordings his home and hand selects the artists we work with. We partake in the1shanti's unique vision that music, and the subsequent work contributing to its success, begins and ends with the artist who creates it. Having partnered with major and independent labels internationally for previous releases, the1shanti has lent insight and guidance in the creation of Flatbush Junction Recordings. For that reason, all of the label's print design, photography, music videos, advertising, radio spots (even this website!) are created with and by the artists it represents. It is not at all odd to find our artists in the office working with us. No disconnected design agencies. No fluff marketing. No payola. It's just us, and we focus on the experience for both the artists and the fans.
But we still put out hit records, isn't that a direct contradiction of what we just said?
Nope. At Flatbush Junction Recordings and Laskar Music, it begins and ends with the music. Sometimes a tree falls in the forest, sometimes the world sings along. We stand behind our artists in both situations.
Didn't we sell out and get offices in Times Square or something?
*Ouch* Busted. Okay, we did have offices on West 42nd Street for a bit (not quite Times Square). Our mission statement is simple: Put out quality music at all costs. That means cutting down on frills in order to give our artists bigger budgets and help them remain in control of their own music catalogues.
So where are we located now?
Our non-essential staff operate out of satellite and home offices globally. Sure, we've got some nice digs in Washington DC. That helps us do other things like take some of our proceeds and help our artists get involved in aiding various global non-profit organizations based in the nation's capital.
Do we accept unsolicited demos?
Flatbush Junction's unsolicited demo policy states that only demos sent by snail mail will be listened to. Do not send mp3 recordings. Send your package to the address on our contact page along with your contact information and email address. Due to the volume of music we receive, please note that it is not possible to make personal comments about your recordings. Despite our inability to respond to artists immediately, all music sent to us is listened to.
What does the name Flatbush Junction mean?
Historically, the label was conceptualized in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Travel to the end of the 2 line and you will find yourself in Flatbush Junction. It is there that the1shanti operated his recording facilities, BK Lounge Studios, for over half a decade; where a majority of his early works were recorded in addition to projects ranging from undergound to commercial rap and alt rock groups.
Who are we?
Support staff, basically. For the artists and fans our music connects with, the label is a constant reminder that home is where the heart is. From the people at Flatbush Junction Recordings, thank you for supporting our musical tradition.
Welcome home.
